About Me

My name is Christie Bethel and I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I have been teaching at Banks Road Elementary since it opened up in 2009. My current teaching experience includes teaching first grade at Willow Springs Elementary and 2nd grade at Lillington Shawtown Elementary. I am a Fuquay native, but now call Apex home. I love animals, especially my cat Bootsie and my parent's yellow lab Lucy. I completed my first half-marathon in April 2011. So when I'm not at school, you will find me at the gym or on a trail running or playing soccer with my friends. I was honored to be selected as Banks Road Elementary's Teacher of the Year for 2013-2014.

Word of the week

This week and two weeks ago we had can't and don't as our sight words for the week.  We have been talking about the apostrophe in these words and how that makes them special.  So our word for the week is: contraction.

Reading- For the last few weeks, we have been working on collecting non-fiction facts for a topic of their choice. We first read the books to get ourselves familiar, then wrote the facts in our own language, and then worked with Mr. Tart to put our information into a power point presentation.  They have been working really hard on typing the facts and finding pictures that relate to their facts.  I can’t wait for you to see all of their hard work!

Writing- We have been working on a winter writing.  We first made a graphic organizer describing our favorite winter activity, the weather in winter, what type of clothing we have to wear, and special things animals do to prepare for the winter time.  We did lots of research by reading many books and found out that animals hibernate, migrate, hide food, and even change the color of their fur to prepare for the winter time.  From there, we have been working on writing a winter story with lots of great descriptions.  This week we will work on editing our story to make sure we have everything that great first grade writing needs to have and then write our final draft.

Math- We have been working on both 2-dimensional (flat) and 3-dimensional (solid) shapes.  We found that we can make parallelogram, trapezoids, and hexagons by combining triangles together.  We also have been exploring 3-d shapes and finding them in our everyday life.  We have been exploring how some can roll, like the sphere, cylinder, and cone.  How both the cube and rectangular prism both has 6 faces, 8 corners, and 12 edges, and how the cube, rectangular prism, cone, and cylinder can slide.

Science- Today our mobiles came home.  We had a great time making them and discovering how to exactly make them balance.  We found out that we have to move the objects on the straw to make it balance. More specifically we found that if a side is heavier, we have to move the center paper clip, which is the balance point, towards the heavier side and it will become balanced.  Have your child show you how to balance their mobile!

Groundhog Day-Well, we had a great day and learned a lot about the furry weatherman!  We found out that Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow which means spring is on its way. But our local groundhog, Sir Walter Wally, did see his shadow and is predicting 6 more weeks of winter.  When we went out as a class, we agreed with Sir Walter Wally.  So I guess only time will tell, to see which groundhog was correct.  Ask your child which groundhog we were hoping was correct.  It may surprise you.
